We’re gonna be real right now. Weddings are expensive. It’s not a secret. The wedding industry is a BILLION dollar business and imported flowers are a huge part of that. It costs money to grow flowers with expensive chemicals and fertilizers, pay people to harvest them, pack them in lots of packaging so they get less bruised, fly them thousands of miles, get them through customs where they get loaded onto refrigerated trucks and trains for distribution before they even hit your florist’s shop. Think of the carbon footprint on that, not to mention all that packaging trash!
Then you are paying for a designer to process these flowers (strip them of leaves and rehydrate them, those puppies are thirsty), source all the vessels, arrange your flowers and deliver them to your wedding venue. Like I said, weddings and flowers are expensive.

But Covid changed a lot of things, duh…I know. Not only did the flower import business grind to a screeching halt but so did weddings. The huge luxury weddings we used to throw were not allowed during the “dark time”. People started getting married with just their closest family and friends in a beautiful intimate setting. They sourced flowers from people’s backyard, or if they were lucky, a local flower farmer. It was more personal, cheaper, hugely romantic and (gasp) better!
Maybe you CAN have a uniquely gorgeous wedding that is memorable AND save enough money for a down payment on a house, too!

Opting for an “a la carte” style wedding is a great way to save that down payment money and stay on a budget. Your bespoke bouquets and arrangements will be designed with local seasonal flowers that you can’t get anyplace else. Pair them with some fresh cut bulk flower buckets so that you can dress your tables with lots of vintage bud vases of various heights and candles. Simple and elegant like these ones:
And the best part (besides keeping it cheaper)? It’s a sustainable way to do a wedding!
Not only is it a trend that is easier on your bank account but it’s sustainable for our environment (that flower isn’t traveling thousands of miles in tons of plastic) and sustainable for our local economy. If you choose local vendors and flowers, you are investing money back into the people you know. The people you are going to buy that house next to.
What do you think? Are smaller weddings here to stay? I hope so!
