How Blomma Flower Company Began

The story of Blomma Flower Company is not so different from many other growers stories.  There may be family that inspired them, a hardship the soil helped them overcome or perhaps a need to give back to our earth and the life that it supports...this is my story.

My name is Amanda and I'm a plant-aholic.  My obsession began innocently when we decided to move to our first home with our own micro plot of land.  I had been working in the organic food industry doing marketing so I already knew a bit about growing organic food, just enough to be dangerous but not enough to satisfy my thirst for learning.  We had this tiny piece of land we could call our own but what could I do with it?  So I took a permaculture course because that aligned with my philosophy at the time and sounded interesting.  Then I was hooked on growing things.  We started small with a dwarf size fruit tree orchard, small fruit bushes and some veg.

And then I met a dahlia...

Dahlia.  The gateway flower...

I was on a Spring trip to the Finger lakes and a winery was giving away bedding dahlias with purchase of wine so I took a few plants home, planted them in pots and was in awe.  Their symmetry, depth of color that changed with the temperature and their down right beauty was amazing.

Little did I know that following Fall I was going to go through one of the toughest times of my life and flowers were going to be the thing that kept me grounded and gave me a vessel to pour my grief, depression and anxiety into.  Nurturing plants from seed to vase gave me something I could control when my personal life was spiraling out of control.

And so I googled dahlias...

I quickly began devouring all things about cutting gardens and stumbled across the term "flower farmer" and found my passion.  I ordered seeds, tubers, bulbs, grow lights; took classes from respected industry leaders and began applying my knowledge.  I fell in love with how nurturing the soil grows the flowers that feed our pollinators who then feed us....and thus, Blomma Flower Company bloomed.

The philosophy

Here at Blomma Flower Company, we have adopted a no-til regenerative growing practice.  By not disrupting the soil it has a chance to populate with good bacteria, microbes and fungi that not only feed my flowers but also creates a healthy living habitat for birds, beneficial insects and pollinators.  It doesn't matter how small the piece of earth you have is, you can still make an impact.  We are focusing on rebuilding our clay soil and putting nutrients back into the earth, while planting varieties that attract and feed our native bees.

We grow & source eco-friendly flowers that are not sprayed with pesticides or herbicides.  You can bury your nose in your arrangement and smell the sunshine wafting from the blooms.

What a concept!

Varieties we are growing include echinacea, yarrow, foxglove, lisianthus, dahlias, cosmos, snapdragons, zinnias, ranunculus, phlox, roses, peonies, lilacs, sunflowers, celosia celosia, and much more.

Basket and wild flowers that feed our pollinators

Blomma?

Blomma is Swedish for "to blossom".  My mother's family hails from Sweden!  She comes from a long line of avid gardeners so this is my nod to my heritage and it's influence on my design aesthetic.

Simple. Clean. Beautiful.
